That’s the way it is!

September 19th, 2008

I totally meant for THIS to be the week that I finally got back into blogging every day. But then on Monday, I decided that THIS was going to be the week to potty train T-Rex. Last week we were at the park when he kept telling me “I have to go potty, I have to go potty!” I looked at him and said, “What? You’re in a diaper!” He then pooped. That was it. I knew it was time.

So with the exception of going to a suprise baby shower on Wednesday night, we spent the WHOLE WEEK in the bathroom, I mean at home, er um, in the bathroom at home. You see, T-Rex loves the bathroom. I think it might have something to do with getting to sit on a chair naked and read books, but he does love the bathroom. Or maybe it has to do with unrolling whole rolls of toilet paper and flushing the toilet 10 times in a row. I can’t imagine what our water bill will be next month! Oh yes, I supervised him, but I can only sit on a stool in the bathroom for so many hours at a time before I go crazy, or need to answer the phone, or pull something out of the oven. And he would just sit there forever, and I would sit there forever waiting for him to actually go.

However, 10 Resolve clean-ups later, and a few loads of laundry, and today we were accident free. I even managed to go to the libarary and Wal-Mart with him in underwear and we had NO MISHAPS!  I am slightly sad to be losing the diaper bag – after all, I do enjoy carrying bags in fun colors to match my outfits. I guess I will just have to start sewing some smaller bags.

Last night, however, I wasn’t sure if we were ever going to turn the corner. Both kids were high strung and I felt like my head was going to explode. I had spent the entire day trying to keep T-Rex out of the bathroom, yet get him to go to the bathroom. The Narrator was handling the latest crisis and I was laying on the couch holding my head trying to prevent it from popping.

It was at this point that Little Miss Sunshine stood next to me and with a very concerned face asked, “Mama, what’s the matter?” I looked at her and with a slight grin said, “You guys are wearing me out!” Without skipping a beat or changing the very concerned look on her face replied, “That’s the way it is!!”

There are absolutely no words to describe her impeccable delivery of that line or how hard I laughed. Yes, truly, that’s the way it is in this house!!!

Chasing Rainbows

September 15th, 2008

I was sitting at my computer checking email a few days ago while the kids were getting their daily dose of Noggin TV. Dinner was in the crockpot, and The Narrator was due home in an hour. It really was a peaceful moment. Suddenly, I realized it was raining. I looked out the window and it was pouring, but the sun was shining as bright as could be, as if there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I smiled and thought to myself, “that’s rainbow weather!” I then turned back to my computer, and poised my hands to reply to a message when I stopped in my tracks.

Have you seen the commercials lately for Sprint internet I think it is? I believe it’s a card you can get for your computer and this older guy goes to these crazy end-of-the-earth places and is all excited to find the internet, but in the background he’s missing the Abominable Snowman or the leprechaun with the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. They are pathetic commercials, really. But I realized I was about to be that old guy. I could turn back to the internet, or I could go chase a rainbow.

“Little Miss! It’s raining! Hurry, go get your shoes and let’s go look for a rainbow!!” She jumped out of her chair and T-Rex was right behind her. We rounded up shoes and umbrellas and wandered out into the driveway in the pouring rain. As soon as I stepped out the front door, I saw a faint rainbow running right through our orange tree and ending in our driveway. If I turned my head just slightly, it disappeared. It was as if it was a rainbow just for me. We stood at the end of the driveway and looked every which way for a rainbow. We didn’t see another one, but we sure did have a good time. Little Miss talked for days about going out in the rain with the umbrellas and looking for rainbows, and seeing the oranges on our tree.

I’d rather be a rainbow chaser with my kids than caught up on all my email any day!

What a summer it was

September 8th, 2008

I just sat down to write, all excited and inspired to start bloging again. And the moment passed as quickly as it came! Rats.

I’m still recovering my brain from the summer. August was back to back to back to back family fun. My sister-in-law and her two kids were here for a week of four-kids-under-four-fun!! She and I were tired at the end of the week, but it was totally worth it. That was the first time our kids had a chance to really spend time together. The day before she left, my parents arrived for a 2 week visit. Then the same day they left to go home, the kids and I left for a week in Michigan with the in-laws. It’s been good family fun. And good family food. I have the extra pounds to prove it. So much for a triathlon. I’m trying to convince The Narrator that doing a 5k in November should fulfill the lost bet as opposed to a triathlon. It’s not working. I need to keep convincing.

That’s the rundown and where I’ve been. And now my brain is tired.
